Since his first recitals at the age of eleven, the violinist Rubén Darío Reina has developed a broad musical activity in various countries around the world. He studied with Olga Chamorro and Eduardo Berrío in the Conservatory of Bogotá. Rubén Darío Reina obtained the first place in the competition "Centenario del conservatorio de Bogotá" (Centennial of the Conservatory of Bogotá) in 1982. Afterwards he performed as a soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of Caldas, Valle Symphony Orchestra of Cali and the Juvenile Symphony Orchestra of Colombia (Orquesta de Cámara de Caldas, Sinfónica del Valle (Cali) and Sinfónica Juvenil de Colombia).
In 1988, the Ministry of Culture of the former URSS granted him a scholarship to study in the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Moscow. There he studied under Gregory Feiguin and Ara Bogdonyan, both disciples of the famous violinist David Oistrakh. After finishing his studies, he obtained the degree of Master of Fine Arts, Concert Violinist and Senior Professor of Violin and Chamber Music.
He was granted an Honorific Diploma in the international Competition of Viña del Mar (Chile) in 1995 and a special award in the Rodolfo Lipizer Competition in Italy in 1996. Among his performances as a soloist, the following stand out: concerts with the Russian Symphony Orchestra, the Novosibirsk Philharmonic, the Chicago Latino Symphonic Festival Orchestra, the Symphonic Orchestra of Lvov (Ukraine), Tchaikovsky Conservatory Opera Studio Orchestra of Moscow and many orchestras from Colombia, Argentina and Bolivia. Rubén Darío Reina has been guest concertino of the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia and the Philharmonic of Bogotá, with which he has also performed as a soloist.
He has performed, accompanied by piano and in different chamber orchestra groups, in several renowned stages like the National Music Auditorium of Madrid (Auditorio Nacional de Música de Madrid), the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Maly Zal and the Rachmaninoff Hall in Moscow, the House of Friendship in Saint Petersburg and several stages in Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Brazil and USA.
Rubén Darío Reina has recorded for the national radio of Spain RNE, for the public television channel TVE, for the Cultural Channel of the Russian television and for Inravisión in Colombia. In 2004, the Colombian Association of Electronic Music (Asociación Colombiana de Música Electrónica) released the CD of the live recording of the premier of the concert for violin and orchestra of the Colombian composer Jesús Pinzón Urrea, performed in the Bolshoi Hall in Moscow.
In 1997 he moved to Spain, where he currently resides. Rubén Darío Reina was a member of the Royal Philharmonic of Galicia (Real Filarmónica de Galicia) and a professor in the School of Higher Musical Studies (Escuela de Altos Estudios Musicales) in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Until 2002, he participated in all the chamber orchestra series of the Royal Philharmonic of Galicia. Afterwards, he transferred to his current position with the Symphony Orchestra of Radiotelevisión Española.
Among his performances in 2010, the following stand out: the soloist violin recital rendered in the Royal Palace of Madrid and the premier of the concert for violin and orchestra of the Argentinean composer Esteban Benzecry, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of Radiotelevisión Española.
